　　The sharp expansion of cities, the rapid growth of population and the shift of a large rural population into cities and towns, will make the urban areas unimaginably expanded and crowded.//

　　The rapid growth of urban population will put heavy pressure on public health, fresh water supply, medical care, food supply, housing, transportation and employment, and also bring about some vicious social problems.//

　　In the meantime, the urban and township development will cause more loss of fertile farmland. The ever-increasing serious air and water pollution will damage crops. All these will form more obstacles to the development of agriculture.//

　　Chinas sports have undergone several thousand years of development. But they were not regarded as an undertaking of the country until 1949, when the People's Republic of China was founded.//

　　The Chinese government attaches great importance to the development of sports. Now, a nationwide network for physical culture and sports has been set up and expenditure on this field has been included in the state budget.//

　　The purpose of developing physical culture and sports in China is to popularize sports among the people and enhance their physique so as to prevent "the infection of various diseases such as SARS.//
